Taylor--Vintage 1970 Lot 58 in original wooden case. Lots 58-61 with metal capsules, lots 59 & 61 embossed, lot 60 two damaged and two with signs of seepage, lot 63 with six metal capsules and eleven damaged, embossed wax capsules. All with badly bin-soiled labels, some stained. Levels: lot 58 into neck, lots 59-60 base of neck or better, lots 61-62 top-shoulder or better, lot 63; thirteen top-shoulder or better, one upper, one mid, one mid/low, one very low-shoulder Tasting note: First tasted in 1972, many notes, 18 since the early 1980s. Originally opaque, virtually black-purple, it remained plum-coloured for nearly 20 years and - with the exception of an unusually precocious Russell and McIver bottling in 1983 - is still a vigorous ruby. Later several notes, slightly variable, particularly on the nose: whiff of mercaptan, rawness and volatility, at best harmonious though subdued. Certainly sweet, full-bodied, rich, good fruit, lovely mid-palate, still powerful, high alcoholic content, good length, tannin and acidity. Showing well at Saintsbury Club dinners in 1996 and 1999: very sweet, full flavoured though a trifle 'edgy'. Most recently, losing some colour; very good spicy bouquet; sweet enough, very good flavour. Last tasted at the Swan Feast, Vintner's Hall, Nov 2001 **** M.B.
