Beschreibung:

TEMMINCK, Conrad Jacob (1778-1858) and Mieffren LAUGIER DE CHARTROUSE. Nouveau recueil de planches colories d'oiseaux, pour servir de suite et de complment aux planches enlumines de Buffon . Paris: F. G. Levrault and Amsterdam: Legras Imbert, [1820]-1838-[1839]. 5 volumes, 2 (361 x 265mm). 600 fine hand-coloured etched plates by and after Nicolas Huet and Jean Gabriel Prtre, 5 double-page showing birds with long tails, bound in systematic order. (Plates 118 and 231 slightly soiled, plate 239 with slight scuff marks, plate 579 with lower corner torn away, only very occasional spotting to plates, though text is browned and spotted, leaf of descriptive text to plate 535 restored, lacking the prospectus, table of plates and post-script.) Contemporary red quarter morocco and red mottled boards, uncut. Provenance : J. F. Symons-Jeune (bookplate). The smaller folio issue of this massive 102 part work, published over almost two decades, August 1820 to January 1839, the earlier numbers issued by Dufour and D'Ocagne, the later ones by Levrault. It was the sequel to the great edition of Buffon's Natural History (Birds, 1770-83) with plates by Martinet, while Desmur's Iconographie Ornithologique (1845-49) was in turn a supplement to this work. Temminck supplied most of the text, while the key contribution of Laugier de Chartrouse lay in providing specimens for the plates from his collection. Despite browning to the text, the plates in this copy are uniformly bright and fresh. Anker 503; Fine Bird Books p. 111 (**); Nissen IVB 932; Ronsil p. 466; Wood p. 593; Zimmer p. 626. (5)
