THE TENNYSON-LOCKER-KERN COPY. FIRST EDITION, one of two issues, of a work compiled by Milton's nephew, and which it is assumed Milton strongly influenced. As the first form of 'companion' to English literature, it must have interested Tennyson and no less Locker, who was known not only for his London Lyrics (1857) but also as editor of the anthology Lyra Elegantiarum (1867), and Patchwork , another anthology of 1879. It was in March 1875 that Tennyson and Lockyer watched Irving play Hamlet , and Tennyson's gift may have been given with happy memories of his visit to London earlier in the year.
