TENNYSON, Alfred 1st Baron (1809-1892) -- PHILLIPS, Edward (1630-?1696), compiler. Theatrum Poetarum: or, A Complete Collection of the Poets . London: Charles Smith 1675. 12° (141 x 73mm). (Title supplied from another copy and holed at inner margin, some spotting and browning, L1 with burn-hole.) 19th-century half calf (later lettering-pieces, lightly rubbed), blue morocco solander case by Scroll Club, New York. Provenance : the gift of Alfred Tennyson to Frederick Locker (inscribed 'Frederick Locker from A Tennyson Dec 8th/75' on front free endpaper; Locker bookplate) -- Charles Elkin Mathews, Codford (inscription on endpaper) -- Jerome Kern (morocco label) -- purchased from James Drake New York, 1 February 1939, $75. THE TENNYSON-LOCKER-KERN COPY. FIRST EDITION, one of two issues, of a work compiled by Milton's nephew, and which it is assumed Milton strongly influenced. As the first form of 'companion' to English literature, it must have interested Tennyson and no less Locker, who was known not only for his London Lyrics (1857) but also as editor of the anthology Lyra Elegantiarum (1867), and Patchwork , another anthology of 1879. It was in March 1875 that Tennyson and Lockyer watched Irving play Hamlet , and Tennyson's gift may have been given with happy memories of his visit to London earlier in the year. Locker published a catalogue of his library at Rowfant, Sussex, in 1886, but the collection was sold to an American bookseller in 1905 and dispersed. Pforzheimer 797; Grolier Wither to Prior 670; Wing
