Teodore Riccio (1540-1600) Autograph musical manuscript signed (‘Theodorus Riccius’), from a canon, n.p. [probably Ansbach, Germany], 27 April 1597 Autograph manuscript music with a signed dedication dated 1597 by Teodore Riccio, Kapellmeister to Georg Frederich, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. Mensural notation in brown ink on three staves. One page, 120 x 70mm, nine lines of text in Latin. Provenance: (1) Kotte Autographs, cat. 50, December 2014, no 368. (2) Schøyen Collection, MS 5529. Text: 'Canon in diapente remissum/ fratres mei elongaverunt se a me/ [three staves of music]/ ‘Haec scribebat Theodorus/ Riccius Illustr:mi ac Excell:mi/ principis Dni. D. Georgi Frider–/–rici Marchionis Brandeburg:/ Prussiae, Silesiae, etc. ducis/ chori musici magr. Onoldi/ 27 Aprilis 1597.’ The Italian composer Teodore Riccio began his career in his home country – the preface to his first book of madrigals describes him as maestro di cappella of SS Nazaro e Celso, Brescia in 1567 – but was to spend most of his life in Germany. In 1575 he arrived at the Ansbach court of Margrave Georg Friedrich of Ansbach-Brandenburg – to whom the present canon is dedicated – moving with the rest of the court musicians to Königsberg when the margrave became administrator of the duchy of Prussia in 1578. In 1585, Riccio was appointed Kapellmeister of the margrave’s court for life, presumably returning to Ansbach with his patron in 1586. Riccio's works are known primarily from printed sources, although a few works survive in manuscripts held at Kremsmünster Abbey, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Brussels, and the Landeskirchliche Archiv in Nürnberg.
