London: John Macrone, 1840. 2 volumes. 12mo (192 x 117 mm). viii, 304; [iv], 298, [1] pp. Frontispieces, 10 plates, and text illustrations after drawings by the author. Original blind-stamped burgundy cloth, spines gilt-lettered. Frontispieces lightly offset to titles, hinges cracked, spines faded and worn at ends, lower joint of vol 2 worn. Provenance: Jerome Kern (morocco bookplates); his sale, Anderson New York, Jan 24, 1929, lot 1335; Albert Henry Wiggin (armorial bookplates); Marjorie Wiggin Prescott (her sale, Christie's New York, Jun 2, 1981, lot 315 (part)). FIRST EDITION, JEROME KERN COPY, one of Thackeray's first popular successes. Thackeray was an art student in Paris in his early twenties. Van Duzer 159.
