Thackeray') to his cousin William Ritchie, 1 rue des Beaux Arts, [Paris], [August 1835], including a small drawing of 'Jeanette on the Boulevards', three pages, 4to , integral address panel; [ with ] an autograph note signed to 'Macpherson', n.d., enclosing, as a contribution to 'Miss Edmonstone's Album', a transcription of 'Horace on Myrtle' in Latin with a mock-translation as 'Titmarsh on Mutton', one page, 8vo , integral blank, laid down; [ and ] an autograph manuscript signed of a poem, 'Doctor Luther', n.d., 25 lines on one page, 4to , the verso bearing printed heading of Bininger & Cozzens, Importers of Brandies, Wines, Liquors, Segars &c, New York.

'I am arrived at such a pitch of sentimentality (for a plain girl without a penny in the world) that my whole seyn, être, or being, is bouleversé or capsized ... God knows how it will end': Thackeray's account of meeting his future wife, Isabella Shawe [whom he was to marry on 20 August the following year, in spite of her lack of fortune and her parents' opposition]. The letter continues with advice on his cousin's approaching university career ('keep yourself out of DEBT') and the continuation of his European tour to Italy. (3)
