Title: ''The Blackheath Golfer'' - hand-colored print Author: Abbott, Lemuel Francis Place [Edinburgh] Publisher: Date: [c.1901] Description: Black and white photogravure print, hand-colored in period watercolor wash, of the "Blackheath Golfer," William Innes and his caddy, taken from the engraving by Valentine Green which was from the famous painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott (1760-1803). Lower margin reads: "To the Society of Goffers at Blackheath. This Plate is with just Respect. Dedicated by Their most humble Servant, Lemuel Francis Abbott " Image size: 16¾x11¾"; 19½x13¾" (overall). Early Facsimile Reproduction. William Innes (1760-1803) was captain of the Society of Golfers at Blackheath, now known as Royal Blackheath. It was the first golf print ever published. Originally issued in black & white and later hand-tinted, it is difficult to establish the first issue, though less than 15 are known to exist. This copy being a turn-of-the-century reproduction done in photogravure, which has been hand-colored in watercolor. See Olman's Guide to Golf Antiques, p. 133; and Olman's The Encyclopedia of Golf Collectibles, pp. 145 & 150. Lot Amendments Condition: Some darkening to middle portion, two 1" chips to top edge, a few faint and small dampstains, mild wear to verso; still very good. Item number: 162299
