Title: The Book of Common Prayer... Author: ** Place: London Publisher: Otridge, Rivington, et al Date: 1816 Description: Notes by John Bayley Printed by A. Strahan on wove paper. (tall 8vo) 9½x6, period purple straight-grained morocco gilt, spine with wide bands, floral tools, all edges gilt. Fore-edge painting apparently depicting the Golden Gate, the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Very nice fore-edge painting with sailing vessels and a steamship with American flags in the foreground, looking towards a calm Bay and sunset; very much with the feeling of the San Francisco Bay, and identified as such in manuscript on front free endpaper. The image is reversed, with the Marin Headlands in the south, probably copied from an engraving. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Cotton Sheppard. Lot Amendments Condition: Mild wear to corners and spine ends, spine a little darkened, fore-edge painting is slightly visible when volume is closed; near fine. Item number: 158273
