First Edition. "This beautiful example of modern book design, executed in high quality materials, is prized not only for the enormous amount of reliable information that it contains, indeed still unmatched in any work since, but also for the large number of high quality illustrations in black and white..." - Sinkankis 3690. Added to the lot is an excerpt from the 20th Annual Report of the U.S.G.S., Part VI, "Production of Precious Stones in 1898," 50 pp., stapled. With a color lithographed plate at end, called by Sinkankis (3613) "a fine col. lith. plate...) Lot Amendments Condition: Light extremity rubbing, spine a little dull, small stain to lower edge of front cover; near fine. Item number: 178499
