The Clifton Rocks Railway. A base metal commemorative token, the obverse reading 'The Clifton Rocks Railway. Commenced 1891. Completed 1893.', and the reverse reading 'Issued to the Passengers on the Opening Day March 11th 1893', 3.5cm x 3.5cm. Note: This funicular railway, of 3ft gauge, was constructed within the cliffs of the Avon Gorge and operated for forty years. The lower station, still visible on the Portway (A4), sat at the base of a 500ft long tunnel which climbed a vertical distance of 240ft at a rising gradient of 1:2.2. Four rail cars were employed, each with seating for eighteen passengers. The building work took almost twice as long as originally envisaged to complete, and at over ú30,000 cost in excess of three times the projected budget.
