The Danish Army in Color Altona, 1829 HYLLESTED, Hans Christian (1794-1838). Collection complète des uniformes de la marine et de l’armée danoise. Altona, 1829. The Danish army and navy in rare hand-colored lithographs. Hyllested, the artist, was born in Copenhagen and served as lieutenant in the military in Denmark and later in Hamburg, where he died. A skillful draftsman, Hyllested depicts Danish soldiers and sailors in various poses, single or in groups, on foot or on horseback, often against colorful backgrounds. Very rare at auction in any condition, and only one complete copy listed in ABPC and RBH. Colas 1510; see Hamburgisches Künstler-Lexicon (1854), p. 120. Folio (410 x 275mm). Title, prefaces, subscription list, index, and 115 hand-colored lithographs separated by tissue guards (occasional spotting and soiling; marginal dampstaining of a few plates). 19th-century half calf over marbled boards, gilt titling on spine (mild wear to edges and corners).
