The David Griffiths Reference Library of Token Literature Denton, M. and Prattent, T., The Virtuoso’s Companion and Coin Collector’s Guide. London, Published for the Proprietor [T. Prattent] by M. Denton, 1797. Eight volumes complete, bound in four. 12mo (17.5 x 11 cm) rebound in 8vo, brown boards with tan leather spine, red and green leather labels on spine with gilt lettering. Finely engraved frontispiece of ‘History Protecting Medals from the Ravages of Time’. Preface leaf, James Wright’s 4 page Observations on Coins. 240 engraved plates, each illustrating both sides of four tokens. The plates are dated from 1795-1797. Interleaved throughout. Blue or buff paper title pages and Conditions bound in. 15, 8, and 7pp index with vol 8. The preface proposed to issue ‘fac-similies of four hundred and eighty different coins, in four volumes twelves, with an elegant frontispiece and title pages, at the price of twenty shillings’ (Manville 238a). £300-400 Footnote Provenance: Ex libris H.
