The first image of the nearly full Earth as seen from the Moon's distance Lunar Orbiter 5, 8 August 1967 Vintage gelatin silver print on fibre-based paper, 20.5 x 25.3 cm (8 x 10 in), with NASA HQ caption numbered 76-H-1432 on the verso Footnotes: This photograph of the Earth was made by Orbiter 5 as it circled the Moon in a polar orbit 361,740 kilometres. Unlike earlier images of the Earth taken by Lunar Orbiters, this one showed a nearly 'full Earth' with features of the eastern hemisphere clearly visible: 'Much of the lighted hemisphere was free of cloud cover, and the picture contains outlines of the entire east coast of Africa from the Mediterranean to the Cape of Good Hope. Features such as Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Red Sea and Arabian Peninsula, and the Suez Canal are are visible' (NASA caption) This was one of the secondary photographs of Orbiter 5's mission, but at the time it attracted high public interest around the world
