Illustrated with 142 plates (3 of them folding maps), most after Catlin, including 3 photogravure portrats of Catlin; 2 large folding color maps (of U.S. showing Indian groups & of Indian Territory). 9x5¾, later cloth. First Edition. Remarkable history of Catlin, his paintings, and the exhibit at the Smithsonian. Howes D416. Without plate No. 196, but plate 100 is duplicated. Lot Amendments Condition: Minor aging, one folding map with 6" stub tear, else very good. Item number: 173327
