The occupation lasted from November 20, 1969-June 11, 1970. Above the lower margin of the poster at center is an allusion to the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie which returned to Native peoples all retired, abandoned and out-of use federal lands. Upon the closure of Alcatraz penitentiary in 1963, the U.S. government declared the island as surplus federal property.
