The Iden Clock Collection - two albums with photographs and hand written annotations produced by the owner The first titled VERY RARE 1660 (EARLY ENGLISH PERIOD CLOCKS) 1675, CHARLES II and with presentation inscription to William Hodson Esq., With the Collectors Regards, Walter J. Iden, July 1944 to inside cover, the photographs pasted onto gilt-edged card leaves opposing hand written descriptions in blue ink featuring early clocks from the collection by Ahasuerus Fromanteel John Fromanteel, Edward East Henry Jones, Thomas Tompion and Daniel Quare hardbound in original textured tan leather; the second untitled with photographs pasted onto grey card leaves illustrating seventy-eight clocks in the collection with almost all labelled in white script with the maker and most annotated in pencil with their respective collection inventory number, contained in ring-bound "LIFLAT" album with grey boards together with a two-page hand written inventory listing each clock next to its respective inventory number and most providing measurements and approximate date of making, the list also marked in red for those illustrated in Cescinsky, Herbert THE OLD ENGLISH MASTER CLOCKMAKERS AND THEIR CLOCKS 1670-1820, (3). The above lot is two from a group of only a handful of albums produced by the owner. The first appears to be carefully prepared and specifically focuses on longcase and table clocks made between 1660 and 1675 in the collection. The dedication to the inside of the front cover indicates that this volume was gifted by Iden to William Hodson in July 1941. The second album seems to be a much broader comprehensive visual 'checklist' of the collection at a certain point, with the accompanying hand-written inventory providing interesting information such as specific dimensions and abbreviated specifications. A possible clue as to the date and purpose of this album is that the inventory is annotated to identify which clocks are Illustrated in "Old English Master Clockmakers & their Clocks", Herbert Cescinsky. This would suggest that the album may well have been compiled to assist with the selection of which clocks from the collection were to be included in the publication. If this is the case then the this album would date to prior to 1938 - making it one of the earliest records of the collection.
