Beschreibung:

The Jews and the Mosaic Law by Issac Leeser, Philadelphia, 1834. English. Part 1: A defence of the revelation of the Pentateuch, and of the Jews for their adherence to the same. Part 2: Four essays on the relative importance of Judaism and Christianity, by a native of Germany and professor of Christianity. The first original work by Isaac Leeser (1807-1868). Leeser was a US Jewish leader and one of the first people who built American Judaism, a philosopher, literary editor who also translated Jewish books into English and wrote many sermons and lectures. These books are the outcome of a series of articles that Leeser published in American periodicals in 1829, which dealt with defending the Jewish religion following a rise in missionary activities in the US. Subsequent to these articles, Leeser was invited to serve as a preacher and community leader of the Mikve Yisrael congregation in Philadelphia, which reinforced his status as one of the most significant figures on the US Jewish scene in the 19th century. Two parts in one volume. VIII, [2], 278 pages [the two pages after the introduction (Contents and Advertisement) are not mentioned by Singerman, see ibid no. 578], 22 cm. Good condition. Several loose leaves and few stains. Stamp and ex-libris. Non-original binding, worn and slightly damaged. Few ink inscriptions.
