Important collection of newspapers selected by and for the late collector and scholar Klaus Werner, whose passion was the study of events relating to the exploration of the Transmississippi West. The newspapers here gathered are not a random sampling of periodicals of the era but were primarily selected for specific articles covering the great drama of the age, the discovery of gold in California and the massive movement westward by those anxious to acquire it. Formed over several decades, the collection is a treasure chest of source material on the great events of the first half of the 19th century.
