Title: The Log of H.M.S. Providence 1791-1793 Author: Bligh, William Place: [Surrey] Publisher: Genesis Publications Date: 1976 Description: 951 pp. Preface by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma. Introduction by Stephen Walters. The original log in facsimile with 12 plates and 6 maps (5 folding). (Thick folio), half calf and green buckram, spine with 5 raised bands, gilt title and 4 gilt decorations, gilt decoration (Breadfruit) on front board, sprinkled edges. No. 216 of 500 copies. HMS Providence was a sloop of the Royal Navy, famous for being commanded by William Bligh on his second breadfruit voyage between 1791 and 1794. The voyage was an unqualified success and was recognized as such not only by the Royal Society of Arts but by the Jamaican House of Assembly, which rewarded Bligh with a purse of 1000 guineas. A scarce and handsomely resented volume. Lot Amendments Condition: Lacking slipcase; some rubbing and scuffing to binding, faded strip at top edge of front board; interior fine. Item number: 288756
