THE MUNAJAT OF THE IMAM 'ALI SIGNED 'ALI AL-HUSAYNI AL-KATIB, SAFAVID TABRIZ, DATED AH 928/1521-22 AD The forty sayings of the Imam 'Ali, Arabic manscript on gold paper, 18ff. plus 4 fly-leaves, each folio with 3ll. of large nasta'liq in a variety of colours alternated with panels of smaller black nasta'liq written on the diagonal with elegantly illuminated corners, two further text panels with a single similar line of nasta'liq on gold-sprinkled ground at the top and bottom of each folio, text panels outlined in gold and colours and laid down on wide gold-speckled coloured margins, opening folio with extremely fine gold and polychrome illuminated headpiece, colophon signed and dated, fly-leaf with copious later owner's notes and stamps, in extremely fine original lacquer binding with flap decorated with central cusped medallion filled with elegant scrolling vine, the doublures similar, some damages to the lacquer Text panel 6½ x 3½in. (16.6 x 8.8cm.); folio 11 3/8 x 7in. (28.9 x 18cm.)
