Fifth edition of volumes I-III and third edition of volumes IV-V. [ With :] Philosophical Transactions . London: various printers to the Royal Society, 1753-1784. Volumes XLVII-LXXIV, 28 volumes bound in 33. Together 37 volumes bound in 44, 4° (233 x 172mm.) Engraved plates (many folding). (Variable browning or spotting.) Near-uniformly bound in contemporary calf gilt, boards with borders of gilt rolls within double gilt fillets, spines gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-pieces in 2, others decorated with foliate, floral and thistle tools (extremities somewhat rubbed and scuffed, occasional marking, some splitting on joints, 11 vols lacking one lettering-piece, one lacking both). THE OLDEST CONTINUOUS JOURNAL OF AN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE: 'If all the books in the world except the Philosophical Transactions were destroyed,, it is safe to say that the foundations of physical science would remain unshaken, and that the vast intellectual progress of the last two centuries would be largely, although incompletely, recorded' (Huxley, quoted in Norman). It would be impossible to overestimate the historical importance of the Philosophical Transactions , which was first published and financed by Henry Oldenburg from March 1664-65 for the new Royal Society (founded in 1662), and, following his death, published by the Society itself. Nearly every contemporary British scientist and numerous foreign scientists contributed extensively to the Transactions in its first hundred years.
