Title: The Poetical Geography designed to accompany outline maps or school atlases. To which are added the rules of arithmetic in rhyme - three editions Author: Van Waters. George Place Cincinnati, etc. Publisher: Date: 1850, 1851, 1853 Description: 72, 80 and 80 pp., respectively. Woodcut illustrations. (8vo) 22.5x16.4 cm (9x6½"), 1st in cloth-backed boards, others in original printed wrappers; woodcut illustration on front board/wrappers. A rather charming work. While the 1850 issue has a small woodcut of gold digging in California, the 1851 and 1853 editions are more notable, with two woodcut views of San Francisco, in 1848 and 1849, the aforementioned depiction of "Gold Digging in California," and a significant map, "Valleys of the Sacramento and San Joaquin. Engraved for the Poetical Geography." Warren Heckrotte notes that "The map is a very close copy of the map in W. Colton's The Land of Gold: Three Years in California, 1850." Provenance: Warren Heckrotte collection. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear to wrappers and boards, some foxing within especially the 1850 edition; good. Item number: 279787
