Title: The Posthumous Papers of The Pickwick Club Author: Dickens, Charles Place: London Publisher: Chapman & Hall Date: 1887 Description: 2 volumes. xi, 206; [2], 207-439, [3] pp. Extra Illustrated, with 51 original watercolored plates by “Kyd” and 18 etchings on India paper inlaid to size (1 of which is dark); plus the 19 monochrome plates (as issued), with tissue-guards, illustrated by R. Seymour, R.W. Buss, Hablot K. Browne (“Phiz”) and J. Leech; plus 2 facsimile plates and the pictorial blue paper front cover of original wrappers for Issue No. 1 bound in at the end of Volume II. 9x6, period full red polished calf, ruled in gilt, spines decoratively tooled in gilt, raised bands, gilt-lettered dark brown morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, inner gilt dentelles, top edges gilt; bound by Zaehnsdorf. Limited Edition. Scarce Extra Illustrated issue, containing splendid original watercolor plates by “Kyd” [pseud. for Joseph Clayton Clark (1856-1937)]. The complete novel in two volumes; Volume I identified as “Volume II” on the title page; Volume II without a full title page. The etched plates and the monochrome are variants of each other. This edition limited to 2000 total copies, of which 500 were issued with plates on India paper, of which this copy has 18 India paper plates inlayed. Spines identified in gilt as “Extra Illustrated.” Lot Amendments Condition: Light rubbing to joints and extremities; tiny chips to Vol. II spine ends and nicks to raised bands, also old black stains to lower fore-edge and endpapers causing some small paper loss to margins; archival paper reinforcement along hinges, occasional faint foxing; from very good to near fine. A clean and attractively bound set with beautiful hand-colored plates by Kyd. Item number: 169877
