Appleton & Company Date: 1867 Description: 134 + [10] ad pp. Illustrated with 3 wood-engraved plates, including frontispiece portrait with tissue-guard. (12mo), original green cloth with decorative gilt-stamped front cover. First Edition. Dunbar's account covers the history of California, the gold discovery, the plight of Sutter and Marshall, etc. Dunbar was among the first passengers to travel to San Francisco from New York by steamer. The last leg of his journey was quite eventful, with coal running out it was necessary to burn every spare plank and spar, and even the bunks, to raise enough steam to continue.
