The Travels of Macarios, Patriarch of Antioch: Written by His Attendant Archdeacon, Paul of Aleppo, In Arabic Author: Paul of Aleppo Place: London Publisher: Oriental Translation Fund Date: 1834 Description: [4], 103, [1] + 4 ad pp. Translated by F.C. Belfour. (4to) 30x24 cm (12x9½") bound in later brown leather, gilt spine. First Edition. Part five of nine "parts" of this very scarce work, important as a source on Wallachia, documenting the main events of Constantin Şerban's rule and the Ottoman expedition of 1657. All 9 parts were eventually published in 1836 by the Oriental Translation Committee in 2 Volumes, but with individual parts published between 1829 and 1836. Copies of this original edition were published for individual persons. An illustrated presentation page is inserted in the back of the volume, presenting this copy to Major-General Colin Macauley, M.P Paul Zaim, known sometime also as Paul of Aleppo (Paul, Archdeacon of Aleppo) (1627–1669) was an Ottoman Syrian Orthodox clergyman and chronicler. Son of Patriarch Macarios III Zaim, Paul accompanied his father in his travels throughout Constantinople, Wallachia, Moldavia, Ukraine and Russia, as an attempt to raise funds and support for their Church (from 1652 to 1659, and from 1666 to 1669). Paul wrote down an account of his visits, The Travels of Macarius, Patriarch of Antioch. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear and scuffing to leather; interior with toning, faint foxing and occasional areas of staining to margins, title page starting to detach, 2" closed tear to 2 leaves at front, not affecting text; a few institutional stamps; overall very good, internally clean.
