Beschreibung:

Theodore Clement Steele (American, 1847-1926) Winter on Fall Creek Signed and dated "T.C. Steele/1896" l.r., titled and identified on a handwritten label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 21 7/8 x 26 7/8 in. (55.5 x 68.4 cm), framed (under glass). Condition: Craquelure, not examined out of frame. N.B. American Impressionist Theodore Clement Steele was a leading member of the Hoosier School. Born in Indiana, Steele studied at the Indiana School of Art and later abroad at the Royal Academy in Munich, where the dark and dramatic landscapes typical of the Academy influenced his early work. However, upon his return to Indiana, Steele turned back to his native landscape for inspiration, leading to a brightening of his palette and an impressionist style that would define his career. He had a major impact on young painters from the mid-west through the founding of the Indianapolis School of Art with William Forsyth. In 1906 Steele settled in the remote region of Brown County, Indiana, where he was rewarded with endless inspiration. Pictured here, Fall Creek is a tributary of the White River in the Indianapolis area.
