THEVENOT, Melchisedec (1620-1692). Paris: Chez Thomas Moette, 1696. Five parts in 2 vols. 2° (351 x 216mm). With separate title-pages for Part IV of the 'Relation', Paris: Chez Gervais Clousier, 1672; for the 'Sinarum Scientia Politico-Moralis', Paris, 1672; and for Thomas Gage's 'Histoire de l'Empire Mexicain', Paris: Chez Thomas Moette, 1696. General title printed in red and black, 14 folding maps, 10 folding plates, 4 single-page plates, and 11 engraved illustrations, some full-page, 46pp. woodcut pictograms to Gage's Mexico, engraved head- and tail-pieces. (a i- i i, Dedication, supplied from another copy, some browning or spotting, mostly in Vol. I, a few leaves misbound, two lower corners torn away affecting margin, a few minor paper flaws.) Near contemporary speckled calf, raised bands, fully gilt in compartments, contrasting labels (spine ends expertly restored with original endpapers, upper hinges slightly cracked but firm). Provenance : Chateau de Rosny, country estate of the ducs de Berry since 1817 (19th-century engraved bookplates with motto 'La Solitude') -- Paul Lebaudy (bookplates). EXCELLENT COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST COMPLETE WITH THE RARE TASMAN MAP IN A NEAR CONTEMPORARY BINDING. Thevenot's notable compilation is substantially concerned with Asia and the East Indies with the latest notices of commercial and missionary voyages, many made by personal acquaintances whom Thevenot interviewed. As each narrative has separate pagination, the order of binding can differ in various copies. This set conforms to the listing in the 'Catalogue' and includes the 'Relations' of Part V, here in their first issue. Only after Thevenot died were these remaining voyages edited for this 1696 edition. It is in Part V that Tasman's voyage appears. The folding map in Vol. I showing Tasman's route accompanies the voyage of François Pelsart and his 'discovery' of 'Terre Australe' in 1629. First published in parts, 1663-1696. Cordier Japonica 33; Cordier Sinica 1944; Sabin 95334; Palau 331564; Brunet V, 810; Lust 260 listing the voyages to China. (2)
