Lesueur; with 36 hand-colored engraved plates interleaved with descriptions. 25x16 cm (9¾x6¼"), duotone boards with pictorial title label on Volume I, paper spine labels on both, supplied cloth-covered slipcase. First Edition. Magnificent hand-colored plates. Thomas Say was the great-grandson of John Bartram and a brilliant naturalist in his own right. His definitive studies of insects and shells, numerous contributions to scientific journals, and scientific expeditions to Florida, Georgia, the Rocky Mountains, Mexico, and elsewhere made him an internationally known naturalist. Say has been called the father of American descriptive entomology and American conchology. He served as librarian for the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, curator at the American Philosophical Society, and professor of natural history at the University of Pennsylvania. Ownership marks of Mary L. Dexter on front cover of Vol. II with additional pencilled provenance on front free endpaper of Vol. II and front pastedown of Vol. I. Several unopened pages.
