Three: Private D. W. Douglas Royal Marine Light Infantry Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Somaliland 1908-10 (PO.14972 Pte. D. W. Douglas R.M.L.I. H.m.S. Philomel.); Naval General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Persian Gulf 1909-1914 (P.O.14972. Pte. D. W. Douglas R.M.L.I. H.M.S. Philomel.) ‘R.M.L.I.’ officially corrected; British War Medal 1914-20, unnamed, nearly extremely fine (3) £400-500 Footnote David William Douglas was born in Reading, Berkshire, on 6 April 1887, and enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Southampton on 27 August 1907. Posted to the Portsmouth Division, he served in H.M.S. Philomel from 27 July 1909, and was present during operations on and off the Somali coast, and in the Persian Gulf, and on three separate occasions he was instrumental in the capture of arms-running dhows, arms, and ammunition, 6 December 19190, 23 January 1910, and 24 April 1910. He returned to Portsmouth on 15 November 1911, and served during the Great War in H.M.S. Dido and H.M.S. Hecla, from 2 August 1914 to 22 August 1919 (entitled to a British War Medal only), before taking his discharge on 26 September 1919, after 12 years and 31 days’ service. Sold with copied service papers and medal roll extracts.
