Three Views - City Scene and Two Desert Scenes Author: Garden City Foto. Co. [and] Unknown Place: Los Angeles, CA [and] Unknown Publisher: Garden City Foto. Co. [and] Unknown Date: Ca. 1880-1890's? Description: Three views include: Large light brown scalloped edge mount 6¾x9¾". Photograph 4⅝x7⅝". Young girl seated on tricycle in front of her house, dolls propped up on the sidewalk to her right, woman standing to her left and another woman leaning out of an open front window. The verso of the photograph is a full-page printed advertisement for their services with the Main Office and Studio located at 606 East Fifth Street, Los Angeles, California. Boudoir gray colored mount 5¼x8½". Albumen print 4⅛x7⅜". Excursion in the desert, two tents, a wagon and buggy, several horses roaming, men near the tents and several palm trees in the background. Gray-Blue card mount 7x9". Photograph 4⅝x7½". Group of people standing and sitting in front of a palm tree surrounded home, water tower in the background. "Harmony Home" written on card mount bottom. "H. D. Kraus, Photographer, 426 Downey Avenue, East Los Angeles, Cal." stamped on card mount verso. Many early photographers captured Los Angeles residents’ likenesses for posterity and by the 1890s, portrait photographers dominated the Los Angeles photography field. J. T. Pollock established Garden City Foto. or Photo Co. at 606 East Fifth Street sometime in the late 1880s, taking views of local attractions as well as portraits. Classified ads in “Out West” magazine, city directories, and the Los Angeles Times show him operating in the 1890s. This photograph may be a matte collodion print, as it is more sepia toned, approximately from the late 1880s. Lot Amendments Condition: Garden City Foto. with 3 pin holes, spotting to mount edge, crease in photograph by girl in tricycle, ink splatter to right side; desert photograph with small spots and handling wear to card mount edge; else Very good. Lots sold without reserve are sold “as Is” and are not returnable under any circumstances.
