Northford collection. The Northford collection, found in a chest of drawers sold to an antique dealer in the early '70s, contained the most complete run of pre-Code horror comics of all pedigreed collections. Northford mags can be identified by a small "circle-X" stamp on back covers. Additional provenance: Metropolis Comics label to back of CGC holder. Bob Powell story in which a crook turns into a giant rat, raiding banks and homes, hoarding stolen jewels: "I can use this stuff to get power... real power over the whole city!" The rat bears a grim resemblance to Nazi-era anti-Semitic caricatures. The resemblance may be deliberate, as Powell is said to have been an anti-Semite: "Powell was a bit of an anti-Semite... he had this great hate for anybody Jewish. Also, people who smoked cigars for some reason.... He was a real weirdo." -Howard Nostrand interview, Graphic Story Magazine #16 (1974). CCG census: One of two 9.0 copies; none graded higher.
