TOMB OF TERROR No. 5 Author: Place: Publisher: Harvey Date: October, 1952 Description: CGC certified: Pedigree Grade: VF/NM (9.0). Cream to off-white pages. Moderate transfer stain interior front and back cover. Lee Elias cover. Stories and art by Bob Powell, Lee Elias, Moe Marcus, Rocco "Rocke" Mastroserio, Rudy Palais and Joe Certa. Northford collection. The Northford collection, found in a chest of drawers sold to an antique dealer in the early '70s, contained the most complete run of pre-Code horror comics of all pedigreed collections. Northford mags can be identified by a small "circle-X" stamp on back covers. Additional provenance: Metropolis Comics label to back of CGC holder. Bob Powell story in which a crook turns into a giant rat, raiding banks and homes, hoarding stolen jewels: "I can use this stuff to get power... real power over the whole city!" The rat bears a grim resemblance to Nazi-era anti-Semitic caricatures. The resemblance may be deliberate, as Powell is said to have been an anti-Semite: "Powell was a bit of an anti-Semite... he had this great hate for anybody Jewish. Also, people who smoked cigars for some reason.... He was a real weirdo." -Howard Nostrand interview, Graphic Story Magazine #16 (1974). CCG census: One of two 9.0 copies; none graded higher. Top 2 copy. Comparable CGC sales: No sales in this grade in over 16 years. A 6.5 copy sold for $660 in June 2019. PBA Grading Guarantee: Any individual comic book lot (not group lots) graded by PBA is guaranteed to match CGC grading. If the buyer chooses to have the comic CGC certified and that certification is lower than PBA’s, the lot may be returned for a full refund of the sales price (hammer price plus buyer’s premium). See terms and conditions for details. Consignments Accepted for PBA's Next Comic Book Auction. Golden Age, Silver Age, Pre-Code, Original Art, Interesting Ephemera Sought. Contact ivan@pbagalleries.com for details. March 26th Comic Book Sale catalogues available. Supplies Limited. Softcover catalogues limited to 200 copies ($45 + $5 postage/handling). Hardcovers limited to 26 lettered copies, dust jackets, special limitation plates ($150). Contact ivan@pbagalleries.com. Lot Amendments Condition: Item number: 315580
