TORRE FARFAN, Fernando de la (1608-1677). Fiestas de la S. Iglesia Metropolitana y Patriarcal de Sevilla . Seville: widow of Nicolàs Rodriguez, 1671 [1672].
TORRE FARFAN, Fernando de la (1608-1677). Fiestas de la S. Iglesia Metropolitana y Patriarcal de Sevilla . Seville: widow of Nicolàs Rodriguez, 1671 [1672]. 2° (306 x 208mm). Additional etched title by Mathias Arteaga after Fr. de Herrera, etched portrait of Ferdinand III by Arteaga after Murillo, portrait of Charles II of Spain by Herrera, 9 plates of emblematic devices by Francisco de Arteaga, Lucas Valdes and Luisa Morales, 9 folding views and plans of and in the church at Seville by the Arteagas and Juan de Valdés Leal (Frontispiece and title silked on verso, some marginal tears, two repaired tears in text, some leaves repaired in inside or other in margins, some folding plates with old repairs on verso, two folding plates backed on strong paper, occasional dampstaining.) 18th-century vellum, flat spine gilt and ruled in compartments, sides with gilt-ruled border and centred with a gilt arabesque, gilt edges (recased, endpapers renewed, vellum sides bowed and wormed, small repairs). Provenance : emblems and their text numbered in manuscript in an early hand – Dresden Central Art Library and Cabinet of Etchings (deaccession stamps). FIRST EDITION OF THE FINEST SPANISH FESTIVAL BOOK OF THE BAROQUE PERIOD : ‘the best illustrated Iberian book, by all odds, contained in the Harvard Collection’ (Hofer), showing the work of the best Seville artists involved in the celebrations surrounding the canonization by Pope Clement X of Ferdinand III (1199-1252). The festivities which are so magnificently recorded were held in the Cathedral of Seville in 1671. ‘The volume is interesting not only as a curious piece of local history, but as being illustrated wholly by artists of Seville. The Triunfo and the other decorations, in the heavy overloaded style of the day, were designed and executed under the direction of the painter, Juan de Valdés Leal (1630-1690), and the sculptor, Bernardo Simon de Pineda, the former himself engraving two of the plates’ (William Stirling Maxwell). See E. Garvey ‘Francisco Herrera the younger: A drawing for a Spanish festival book’ in Harvard Library Bulletin , 1978, p. 28; Hofer 86; Palau 335597; Praz, p.94; Vinet 815.
