The National Metamorphoses.
N.p.: n.d [but Germany, mid-19th century]. 24 tiles (each tile: 1 x 2 x 3/16 inches; 25 x 52 x 5 mm.) forming a series of 8 wooden puzzles. Each puzzle comprising a colored lithographed image printed across three separate tiles. Original wooden box with paper-covered sides, sliding lid covered with a pictorial colored lithographed paper label lettered in German, French and English, lid and box with decorative border. Condition : box lightly rubbed. an attractive puzzle game, with the tiles forming images of four soldiers in different uniforms, and four symbolic animals (i.e. lion, eagle, stag, stallion). Tiny abstract symbols are printed in the upper corner of each piece to aid in finding the right combination. Comic Metamorphoses for Girls . [N.p. but Germany: n.d. but mid-19th century]. Series of 11 (of 12) colored lithographed images (approx. 7 x 4 ½ inches; 180 x 117mm.) printed on stiff card and divided into three unequal sections (which re-combine to form the full picture). Original wooden box with paper-covered sides, with sliding lid covered with pictorial colored lithographed label lettered in German, English, French and Dutch. Condition : separate sections a bit warped; box a bit rubbed and lightly soiled. lovely puzzle cards forming images of young women at various pursuits: ice skating, dancing, cooking, playing a musical instrument, etc. To help the young solver, each individual section is labeled with a lower case roman letter ("a" through "m"). The three sections with "a" on them complete one puzzle, the three with "b" a second, etc. The three cards for puzzle "c" are lacking (and "j" was presumably not used). Puzzle Blocks. [N.p but Germany: n.d. but late 19th century]. A set of 6 wooden blocks (1 /1/8 x 1 1/8 x 1 1/8 inches; 30 x 30 x 30 mm.) with chromolithographed images mounted on each face (forming six pictures), 6 original chromolithographic guide sheets reproducing these images. Later decorative box with one of the original six guide sheets mounted on the lid. Condition : one guide sheet slightly defective; label on lid lightly rubbed. a charming toy puzzle with images of children at play .
