Travels in the Interior Inhabited parts of North America. In the years 1791 and 1792. Edinburgh: Printed for the Author, and sold by John Guthrie, 1793. [2], x, 387, [1] pp. Half-title. Folding letterpress table. Engraved portrait frontispiece partially hand-colored, 2 engraved plates, 1 of which is folding. 8vo (225 x 138 mm). Untrimmed in original marbled boards, cream spine. Custom quarter morocco slipcase (sunned). About 3 closed tears internally, a little fingersoiling to frontispiece, covers coming loose. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION. Called by Sabin "a curious and entertaining book." The engravings are delightful. Campbell's route took him from Scotland to St John's, New Brunswick, Frederick Town, Quebec, Montreal, Kingston, Niagara, Grand River, Genesee County, the Mohawk Valley, Albany, and down the Hudson to New York and New Jersey. He includes an account of his guide, David Ramsay, captured by Indians, an account of St. Clair's defeat, his own conversations with Captain Brant, and reflections on the Confederate Indians "with regard to their throwing off their allegiance to the mother country, and their falling into the hands of the federal states" (Lande).
