Title: Travels Through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee Country, the Extensive Territories of the Muscogulges or Creek Confederacy, and the Country of the Chactaws Author: Bartram, William Place: London Publisher: J. Johnson Date: 1794 Description: xxiv, 520, [6] pp. Copper-engraved frontispiece; engraved folding map; seven copper-engraved plates. (8vo) 8½x5¼, black half morocco and marbled boards. Second London Edition. The frontispiece is a portrait of Mico Chlucco the Long Warrior, King of the Siminoles, and the other plates include plants and two of a great soft-shelled tortoise. The map shows the coast of Florida from above St. Augustine to Cape Canaveral." A work of high character well meriting its wide esteem"-Howes. "This book of travels is famous both for its intrinsic worth and for its associations with Wordsworth and Coleridge. While Bartram loved to parade his knowledge of botanical nomenclature, he leaves plenty of room for a fascinating narrative of his journeys and a valuable description of Indian life. He embarked for Charleston, South Carolina, in April, 1773, and returned to Philadelphia in January, 1778, but he makes no mention of the Revolutionary war then under way." - Cox II. Howes B223; Sabin 3870. Lot Amendments Condition: Front joint cracking, some scuffing to leather; light foxing; very good. Item number: 210097
