With 9 lithographed plates of views (2 in color); 9 duo-tone lithographed topographical sketches on 4 plates; 2 copper-engraved maps by W. & A.K. Johnson, including a large folding map laid-in, in the back; plus several engraving vignettes and tables within the text throughout. 9¾x6¾, rebound in early twentieth century cloth-backed boards with hand-lettered paper spine label, new endpapers. First Edition. Significant account of mountaineering in the alps, with some striking illustrations; the large folding map, drawn from Forbes' surveys and sketches, is quite detailed and accurate, being Map of the Mer de Glace of Chamouni and of the Adjoining Mountains. Scarce in any condition and edition, most copies are often found rebound, such as this copy. Perret 1707; Wäber BSL III/181; Steinitzer 36 and 81-82; Neate F45. Lot Amendments Condition: Ex-library copy with call-numbers written on the spine. Light edge wear, minor fading to covers, soiling; occasional foxing, penciled underlining and a few short notes scattered throughout; still a very good copy overall. Item number: 158395
