Two 19th century coral necklaces, both composed of coral, Corallium rubrum, beads, the first necklace of graduating beads, spaced by small gold beads between, later restrung, with additional beads added either side of the gilt metal barrel clasp; the second necklace composed of slightly graduated flattened barrel-shaped beads, to single stone clasp, first: largest bead diameter approximately 15.5mm, smallest 6mm, necklace length 32cm; second largest bead diameter approximately 7mm, smallest 4mm, necklace length 41.5cm. £400-600 Condition Report The first necklace is composed of 21 well matched graduating beads of mid orange colouring, some of the beads are spherical, some more flattened in shape. All have visible graining and natural imperfections. The gold spacer beads comprise two central beads with applied ropetwist detail, the remaining beads are of plain spherical form. (The beads are assumed gold but untested as such). These gold beads are generally worn and misshapen, with dents and splits to many. To each side of the clasp there are a further 6 coral beads. These appear to match the beads of the second necklace, leading to the assumption that the first necklace may have been extended using beads from the second necklace. The coral beads of the second necklace have more variation to the colour, are of slightly paler hue and are less well matched than the first. There are many natural imperfections to the beads. First necklace weight 43.0gm, second necklace weight 30.0gm. Footnote Please note that coral is covered by CITIES legislation and may be subject to export and other trade restrictions.
