TWO INRO [MEDICINE CASES] Edo Period (Late 18th/Early 19th Century) The first: three-case; red lacquer ground; decoration in gold, silver, black and red hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer]; compartments and risers gold nashiji [gold flakes suspended in clear lacquer]; rims gold lacquer; on one side drums and drumsticks in a temple building, on the other side a courtier sleeping on the engawa [veranda]; signed in gold hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer] on the base Koma Kyuhaku saku [made by Koma Kyuhaku]; the second: two-case; brown lacquer ground; decoration in gold hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer] and shell; compartments and risers gold nashiji [gold flakes suspended in clear lacquer]; rims gold lacquer; a crane on one side and three chidori [plovers] on the reverse; signed in black lacquer on the base Shigekata , with a kao 2 5/16 x 2 11/16in. (5.9 x 6.8cm.) and 1 13/16 x 2¾in. (4.6 x 7.0cm.) respectively (2)
