lot of 3. Includes secretarial letter signed by Cass, 1p, 7.5 x.9.5", 29 Sept. 1858, Washington, DC. To Hon. C. E. Stuart of Kalamazoo, MI, concerning information about a Kalamazoo resident who "went missing" in Panama. PLUS secretarial letter signed by Cass, 1p, 8 x 10", 20 Aug. 1859, Washington, DC. To R. Jewett, Esq. of Boston regarding the names of the Prussian and two other Consuls; AND Address Delivered Before the New England Society of Michigan, December 22, 1848. Detroit: F.P. Markham & Brother, 1849. 8vo, 47pp and printed front wrap, possibly removed from other binding, hand-stitched on left. Although Lewis Cass (1782-1866) spent most of his early years in the Northeastern United States, he is most associated with Michigan and the Northwest Territory. He moved to Ohio in 1801 and was admitted to the bar while living near Zanesville, serving a few years later in the state House of Representatives, then as the U.S. marshal for the district of Ohio. He resigned this post to serve in the Army in 1813-1814, attaining the rank of Brigadier General. Once this second revolution was settled, he was appointed Governor of the Michigan Territory, and was associated with that region thereafter. He served a number of federal positions, including Secretary of War (1831-1836), member of the diplomatic mission to France (1836-1842), U.S. Senator (1842-1848, 1849-1857), Secretary of State (1857-1860). He was nominated as the Democratic candidate for president in 1848, although unsuccessful in his bid for the highest office. Provenance: Ex James E. Sanders Collection Condition: Typical light foxing and toning. Front wrap of pamphlet faded.
