Title: Two pieces of original artwork for the Chugg Water Journal, a handwritten newspaper produced in Fort Laramie in 1849 Author: Place: Fort Laramie, Wyoming Publisher: Date: 1849 Description: Includes: Pen-&-ink drawing of four men seated around a table, reading a copy of The Chugg Water Journal, with the periodical name emblazoned at bottom, along with place Fort Laramie, October 1849, Vol. I, No. III. 19.5x24.5 cm. Pen-&-ink drawing titled "Emigrants scaling the Outworks, Fort Laramie," showing men on foot and in covered wagons pushing over a ditch and ramparts. There is a sign warning "Notice Emigrants, Keep Out," and in lower margin, to the left of the caption, is the jocular notation "Push on boys - there's a dumpling a-head. Rare original artwork from the self-described "largest paper printed at Fort Laramie," which was entirely written by hand, produced during the gold-rush year of 1849, including a somewhat comical depiction of emigrants crossing the outer defenses of the fort. Lot Amendments Condition: Some soiling and aging with discoloration from mounting glue; very good. Item number: 280468
