TWO VERY PALE GREEN JADE FIGURE CARVINGS18th century The bearded sage crisply-carved in long flowing robes seated with his legs crossed, his hands outstretched as if at his desk, his hair tied into a bun and kept under a cloth cap, with contemplative expression, the boy with jovial expression and arms folded, also in loose flowing tunic tied at the waist, both on a carved wooden stand. 9.5cm (3 3/4in) high.; 9.4cm (3 3/4in) high. Music is an important part of the practice of arrow vase. The title of the music piece played when playing arrow vase was Lishou (Cat Head), an ancient poem in the style of Book of Poems, and the band was assembled with strings, drums and se (zither), which is recorded in the chapter touhu (Arrow Vase) of the Confucian classic, Li ji (Book of Zhou Ritual). The figure of the old musician might play a se (zither) according to his fingerings and standing position. Compare with a related jade carving of Shoulao, 18th century, illustrated in Chinese Jades from the Collection of the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, 1989, no.62, where the author notes that the 'clean crisp lines are typical of a well-known group that can be attributed to Suzhou workmanship of the first half century of the Qing dynasty'. 參考一件西雅圖美術館藏一件十八世紀玉雕壽老,刻工與本件頗似,見《Chinese Jades from the Collection of the Seattle Art Museum》,西雅圖,1989年,編號62。
