Two volumes written in mainly logbook style, the first concerning Steel's service on HMS Duke of Wellington, the Flag-Ship of Admiral Sir Charles Napier (an early example of a steam and sail warship), Napier later succeeded by Rear Admiral Sir Richard Dundas C. in C. Baltic Fleet 1885, later service included Calcutta, Cape of Good Hope, Steel was a 'rare breed' of officer being a 2nd Lieutenant Engineer, his ships include HMS Arrogant, Superior, and a gun vessel HMS Assurance, his final voyage appears to be Madras to England, Spring 1859, after a period in hospital he is appointed an 'Inspector of Machinery'.
