U.S. Akron, Los Angeles, Macon and Shenandoah An unusual collection of approximately 80 press and other photographic images of these four U.S. Navy airships, including the Akron outside the Goodyear-Zeppelin hangar at Lakehurst, group photographs of crew, the airship during construction, a rare image of the 'spider' plane hooked onto the trapez dropped from the hold of the aircraft when in flight, interior of the ship showing girder construction, the airship in flight, launching ceremony, the Board of Enquiry after the loss of the Akron, and other images. Images of the Los Angeles include the King of Siam in the gondola of the dirigible, July 27 1931. Detail shows exterior navigation equipment, group photograph of the crew, a UO-1 Vought biplane being hooked onto the airship while in flight over Lakehurst, 25.5.1930, group photograph of the delivery crew of the Los Angeles, the reparations airship from Germany, showing Hugo Eckener, Commandant Kraus, Major Kennedy and others, gondola controls and other images. U.S. Navy Macon images include the dirigible in flight, the control gondola, ground handling, crew sleeping quarters, 'hook-up' aircraft closeups, the rescue of survivors of the Macon disaster 2.22.1935, and others. Images of Shenandoah include the first flight 5.9.1923, the captain, Commander F.R. McCrary, the leviathan at rest in the hangar at Lakehurst alongside the Los Angeles, and others.
