U.S. Navy Silver Flatware Service, Canfield & Brother, Baltimore, Maryland, c. 1835-45, fiddle pattern service composed of a ladle, two stuffing spoons, twelve serving spoons, twelve tablespoons, twelve teaspoons, twelve dinner forks, eleven dessert forks, three salt spoons, and four other silver-plated pieces, nearly all engraved on the back of the handles "Sinclair/U.S.N.," lg. to 12 1/2 in., approx. 121 troy oz. Note: According to family history, the flatware was owned by Captain George Sinclair (1816-1885), a son of Commodore Arthur Sinclair. Captain Sinclair served in the United States Navy and took part in the Wilkes Expedition to explore and survey the Pacific Ocean in the 1830s. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Captain Sinclair, whose family roots lay in Virginia, resigned his U.S. Navy commission to join the Confederate Navy and served as a cruiser captain through the war.
