UPJOHN. A SUPERB AND VERY RARE IVORY, AGATE AND PASTE-SET FAN SET WITH A 22K GOLD WATCH AND COMPARTMENT FOR SMELLING SALTS, MADE FOR THE CHINESE MARKET Movement signed Upjohn, No. 248, circa 1760 With miniature gilt-finished cylinder movement, chain fusée, conical pillars, blued rectangular disc and steel balance with balance bridge, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals, outer ring with Arabic five minute divisions, gilt hands, with paste-set bezel, fitted within the pivot of the carved ivory and paste-set guardstick embellished with dendritic agate cabochons, the opposite guardstick similarly-set but fitted with a compartment for smelling salts, the leaf finely painted on both sides with Bacchus and Ariadne on the island of Naxos, the sixteen ivory sticks finely pierced and engraved with a mythological scene of Hercules at coronation and crowds of youngsters frolicking with a dragon, movement signed and numbered 280 x 530 mm.
