Vacheron Constantin, Gerard Mercator 1594-1994 Japan, Limited Edition No 12/30, a gentleman's platinum Double Retrograde wristwatch, circa 1994, ref: 43050, No 744533, the circular two piece screw down case with arched lugs and crystal display back, the blue enamel dial with a map of Japan and signed J&L Genbrugge, with two retrograde hands in the form of compasses and two calibrated dials indicating minutes and jump hours, 36 jewel Vacheron Constantin automatic movement adjusted to five positions and hot and cold isochronism, the yellow gold rimmed rotor engraved '1594 GÒrard Mercator 1994', cal: 1.120/2 No 862033, on a black strap with an 18 carat white gold Vacheron Constantin buckle, case 3.6cm diameter, with a Vacheron Constantin ebonised fitted case, the original guarantee and paper work in Japanese and outer packaging The Mercator range of watches, created by Vacheron Constantin, commemorate the European voyages of discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries and, in particular, the 400th anniversary of the death of the celebrated cartographer Gerard Mercator (1512 -1594). The dials of these watches are enamelled with the Continents and Seas as represented in Mercator's original maps. The highly complex Mercator movements and dials were created in collaboration with the Belgian enamellers Lucie and Jean Genbrugge and Vacheron Constantin, a Swiss watch maker with a heritage dating back to the mid 18th century. The Mercator range took the design inspiration for its cases from the Vacheron Constantin archives of the 1940s.
