VAN MAELE, Martin (1863-1926) – [GAUTIER, Théophile (1811-1872).] Obscenia. Lettre à la présidente. Poésies érotiques. Brussels [but Paris]: heirs of Poulet-Malassis [Jules Chevrel], 1907. Octavo (203 x 128 mm). 10 hand-coloured engravings, including the frontispiece and the two plates of music sometimes described as one engraving, and a duplicate monochrome suite, i.e. 20 plates, all by Van Maele, each set with a tissue guard with printed caption, engraved vignettes. 20th-century brown crushed half morocco, original printed wrappers bound in, spine with raised bands, one compartment titled in gilt, top edge gilt (small scuff one front cover filled-in). Provenance : J.B. Rund (pencilled annotations on front endpaper). FIRST EDITION. A RARE UNRECORDED STATE WITH TWO EXTRA PLATES OF THE RARE HAND-COLOURED ISSUE . The limitation calls for just 50 copies with hand-coloured plates, and 150 copies with plain plates only; this very unusual copy is hand-coloured and numbered 154, but with ten plates in each suite instead of eight. AE and ABPC record only one copy of the coloured issue in the past 40 years, the Nordmann copy, with just 8 plates. WorldCat lists only one copy, in the British Library. An excellent example of this rare book showing Van Maele at his best. Dutel 608 (also calling for just 8 plates).
