VERDI, Giuseppe (1813-1901). Autograph letter signed to Francesco Guidi, Milan, 1 August 1846, regretting that he cannot make use of Guidi's talents which he esteems and mentioning that he will be doing an opera in Florence, 1 page, octavo, with integral address leaf, (minor foxing) Verdi writes on his return from Recoara, a fashionable spa near Verona. He had gone there with his friend and librettist Andrea Maffei. Both men needed the break. Verdi's health was poor and Maffei was in the process of separating from his wife Clarina. The opera in Florence to which Verdi refers is presumably Macbeth . He and Maffei collaborated on I masnadieri which was premiered, soon after Macbeth , in London on 22 July 1847. In this letter Verdi politely declines the opportunity of working with Guidi lets him down gently spero che si presenti occasione più propizia . Apparently unpublished.
