London: Richard Reily for the editor, 1741. 11 engraved plates and maps (10 hand-coloured or printed in colours, one of these folding), extra-illustrated with 12 close-cut engravings (10 mounted as plates on five leaves, 2 mounted as tailpieces). (Lacks final ?blank 3I2, one plates with neatly repaired marginal tear, another spotted.) [ Bound with :] VERGILIUS. Bucolicorum ecologae decem. The Bucolicks ... translation and notes. By... Martyn. Uncoloured engraved portrait frontispiece, 5 plates or maps (4 hand-coloured, one folding), extra-illustrated with 25 close-cut engravings on 13 leaves and 4 etched plates of cameos. (Lacks final ?blank 2O4.) 2 works in two volumes, 4 (277 x 214mm). Bound as a matched set in early 19th-century red straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with decorative border of fillets and stylised foliage roll, the large central panel with elaborate fan-shaped cornerpieces made up from various small tools including a distinctive head-of-barley tool, the spines in six compartments with double raised bands with onlaid black morocco strips between, the second compartment with green morocco lettering-piece, the fourth with 'volume number' I or II on onlaid black morocco roundels with surrounding small tools and pointill work, the other compartments with repeat decoration of small onlaid black morocco roundels surrounded by small tools and pointill work, gilt turn-ins with greek-key border, g.e. (light scuffing to upper joints). VERY FINE COPIES OF THE FIRST EDITIONS of Martyn's "highly esteemed" versions. The bindings date to around 1800 and are possibly by Christian Kalthoeber.
