(Blank margins of title restored, first gathering frayed and reinserted and A6 misbound, clean tears in leaves R4, 2E8, 2M6 d7 and f7 without loss of text, occasional staining throughout.) Contemporary blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, pastedowns from a 13th-century Italian legal manuscript (restored and rebacked, clasps lacking); brown quarter morocco folding case. Provenance : Petrus Mell? (faint 16th-century inscription on title); presented to the Augustinian monastery in Cologne by Petrus Metternich in 1641; Count Arenberg (Nordkirchen bookplate); L.H.P. Klotz (sale, Christie's London, 2 November 1994, lot 259). A fine copy with contemporary coloring of one of the great German woodcut books of the Renaissance, the masterpiece of the artist known as the Late Master of the Grüninger Workshop. Sebastian Brant was commissioned by the publisher to edit the work and based his commentary on that of Cristoforo Landino, adding several poems not in earlier editions of Virgil.
